Design by committee - London 2012 Olympic Logo

This is the new logo for the 2012 London Olympics! This is an example of design by committee. The committee of the inept. Its a symbol of banality. The more I see it the more I want to rant. I think Theo Spark has captured its true essence.
The organisers (Locog) said they were after something “that would capture the hearts and minds of everyone, give them an emotional attachment”
How could you emotionally attach yourself to that logo? I’m not the greatest logo designer, I put my hands up to that but I could do a lot better than this.
Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: “This is an iconic brand that sums up what London 2012 is all about - an inclusive, welcoming and diverse Games that involves the whole country. “It takes our values to the world beyond our shores, acting both as an invitation and an inspiration. This is not just a marketing logo, but a symbol that will become familiar, instantly recognisable and associated with our Games in so many ways during the next five years.”
What does Tessa Jowell know about iconic brands? (Tessa’s background is in psychiatric social work, social policy and public sector management) Tessa you might be a whizz at political spin and hush money (just ask your hubby) but you know jack about visual design, good taste or aesthetics!
So often committee’s and ego’s get in the way of good design and what you end up with is bland crap. Pressure is put to bear on the people that are designing the brand and they are steered and influenced away from what they know is aesthetically right.
The reason Apple Computer turns out such iconic industrial design is because they have a brilliant industrial designer, “Jonathan Ive“. They don’t invite all and sundry to have a stab at creating an ipod or a Macbook. They have faith in the designer and they let him get on with it. the market decides its worth not the committee of they.
In the case of London’s Olympic logo it would appear “Everyone’s a designer” but the market or more precisely the blogosphere has decided its crap. I’m not alone in my repulsion of this logo.
Sorry Locog my heart and mind has not been captured (why do they always have to use that trite New Labour spiel). Maybe when the IOC are no longer corrupt, the athletes are no longer on drugs and the logo is something of inspiration I might be interested.

[…] This is what happens when you let a commitee loose on a project… brought to my attention by Mr Fox’s amusing blog on this very issue. Nice to see Mr Fox getting even more rebellious
